What's Resilience-Based Trauma Training about?

Resilience and trauma are two sides of the same coin. Building resilience is a key trauma-resistance and recovery strategy. It's what helps us handle life's trials, tests and setbacks, and acts as a stress buffer and preventative. Treating trauma and building resilience are essential for healthy workplaces, healthy teams and a healthy life.

Whether slow or sudden and whatever triggers it – accident, work-load stress, toxic work culture, natural disaster or other anxiety-creating events – trauma distresses and disconnects us, drains our resilience and well-being, and plays havoc with our nervous system and ability to function effectively.

Trauma ignored and left to fester untreated can keep on triggering distressing physical, emotional and mental side-effects that make life and work hard-going and can damage us and impact others around us. [ Read more about resilience and handling trauma at work ]

The idea of Resilience-Based Trauma Training (RBTT) is to turn the tables on trauma.
bullet

The conventional approach has mostly been to let people get traumatised, see if they handle it, then help those not coping to deal with it afterwards, post-trauma.

bullet

A resilience-based approach aims to give everyone an idea of what may happen to them with trauma, then help them build resilience and learn a few trauma-handling resistance strategies, as a buffer or preventative. It normalises trauma reactions, effects and behaviours that have customarily been seen as abnormal.

bullet

Instead of thinking: "What's wrong with me?" a resilience-based approach asks: "What happened to you and what strengths and resources can you call on to help get you through this?

Fortunately, resilience skills can be learned. Understanding the link between what goes on in potentially traumatic situations and how we typically react can become a first line of defence and self-help.

Learning a few Trauma Resistance First-Aid Strategies enables you to manage yourself better in the face of trauma and be able to also help others spend more time in their 'resilience zone' and less time out of it in trauma.

Building Resilience – Resisting Trauma...

We can all learn ways to train our brain to strengthen resilience – to get more in the tank to cope with hard times, unanticipated incidents and acute stress at work.

bullet RBTT helps me learn to manage my own reactions by providing tools and personal strategies to use to get me out of trauma back into my 'resilient zone' and to regain my emotional balance. It's emotional self-managing.
bullet

RBTT helps managers and supervisors in their role as emotional care-takers, reflect on how our culture handles acute stress and trauma and learn some simple ways to be able to talk things over and assist staff and colleagues who may be having a hard time of it.
