Leading through Conversations: 7 Principles for Constructive Conversations at Work -- What this Program is about...

Conversations are quite simply too important for leaders to ignore. The calibre of conversations you have is a telling indicator of team culture, leadership climate and change success and a key element for the effective functioning of any team. Ultimately, it’s conversations that determine the performance culture of your workplace.

As a leader, you’re the role model for the way conversations happen in your place. When you dig down into what leaders do day-in and day-out, they spend a great deal of time having conversations. Through constructive conversations, we connect with others, inspire, influence, empathise, energise, organise and motivate. They’re the major forum where we learn together, solve problems, talk over issues, influence others, make decisions, build relationships and take action.

In fact, when you stop to think about how much gets done through conversation, it’s really a core business activity!

At an individual level, conversations are the arena where leaders most visibly demonstrate their level of self-awareness, mindfulness, capacity to connect with others, mental agility, cope-ability and emotional intelligence. Knowing when and how to use different conversational tools is a vital but all too often neglected element for personal mastery, inspirational leadership and business success – no matter what kind of leadership position you're in!

Our 2-day Leading through Conversations clinic (and its 1-day counterpart, Constructive Conversations at Work) is a unique program that offers an exceptional opportunity to practise a set of simple, effective and easy-to-learn conversational tools that will extend your conversational capabilities, strengthen your leadership skills and help you to manage your interactions in a more mindful, effective and productive manner.

This practice-intensive program is designed for current and emerging leaders who understand the importance of being able to converse with awareness and versatility as critical qualities for effective productive leadership.  It takes you through 7 key Principles for more Constructive Conversation to help you:
bullet

See what's going on in the discussions you have now and what you can do to get more out of them

bullet

Raise the level of frank, open interchange of views between people and create more collaborative conversational climates

bullet

Make your meetings and other conversational interactions more persuasive, perceptive and meaningful

bullet

Move from unproductive debate and adversarialism to more constructive conversation

bullet

Challenge others’ views in ways that don’t raise defensiveness and do result in creative synergy and shared meaning

bullet

Practise not only putting your position clearly but inquiring about other’s viewpoints

bullet

Heighten your conversational awareness and adaptability

bullet

Enhance your relationships and strengthen your ability to lead more effectively through skilful discussion

bullet

Our Conversational Coaching approach:

Like all Change Forum programs, this clinic:
bullet

Takes a tool-kit based approach: Equips you with a set of simple, effective and easy-to-learn tools to enhance the quality of your conversations and widen the range of discussions you can have in all sorts of settings – one-on-one, meetings, problem-solving sessions and team discussions.

bullet

Comes with a substantial self-directed Guide to support your ongoing learning after the coaching clinic – containing simple explanations of key conversational concepts, step-by-step outlines of tools with tips to apply them as well as scaffolding to construct your own coaching program.

bullet

Focuses on actual tools: We keep our theory-breaks slim. After all, you can read about how to improve your conversations anywhere. We think people learn best through doing – so the focus of our clinics is on giving you actual practice and building confidence to use the tools back in real-life conversations.

bullet

Accents practising in a safe environment: When you’re back at work, you seldom get a safe environment to practise in. In work conversations, you’re under pressure ‘playing the game’ – there’s no time to reflect, it’s too risky to try out a new tool or approach and you rarely get feedback about your conversational behaviour. Part of the appeal of our clinics is you get to practise in a safe, small group environment to develop new strategies for managing your conversations in a more mindful and effective manner.

bullet

Deal with real-life conversational challenges: We address the real conversational challenges you face, adapting the content of each clinic to cover major areas of need or interest.

bullet

Who should come along to this Clinic?

Our conversational coaching participants come from so many different backgrounds – admin staff, public sector managers, line leaders, admin staff, psychologists, health professionals, school leaders, mayors, councillors, teachers, community-service workers, team leaders, aspiring leaders...

It doesn’t matter what level in the organisation or what their profession is, all have one thing in common: they're keen to learn new tools to boost their conversational capability, enhance their professional and personal relationships and conduct more constructive and skilful conversations in a range of different discussion arenas.

Here are 10 main aims identified by the many participants who’ve already attended our clinics:

bullet

I never seem to get my point across without people misunderstanding me...

bullet

I often find myself saying things I don’t mean – just to be polite or keep the peace...

bullet

I sit through meetings in silence knowing the real issues aren’t being raised...

bullet

I think things to myself – but don’t ever say them in the conversation...

bullet

I often put off having difficult discussions to avoid argument and conflict…

bullet

Whenever I express a different point of view, it always ends up in an argument...

bullet

I avoid having conversations with people because they’re just too difficult...

bullet

I have trouble connecting with people and really understanding what they’re on about...

bullet

People always misinterpret my motives or don’t understand my way of thinking...

bullet

I always leave meetings wondering why I didn’t bring up certain things...

bullet

I lack the confidence to speak up and say what I need to say...

bullet

I get sidetracked into talking over other problems and not the one I want to bring up...

bullet

People seem to ignore my ideas and suggestions and just talk about their own...
