…helping leaders tackle hard talks

…a solutions approach to delivering difficult feedback

Winning Formulas – Watching What You Say…

As with all my conversational coaching programs, Positive Performance Conversations provides you with a comprehensive range of easy-to-use verbal formulas to help you more carefully craft your approach.

Yes I do mean verbal formulas: collections of words and phrases I recommend you try to start using in your performance conversations. So often the results we get when trying to tackle a difficult performance issue depend not only on what we say but also how we say it – and a few small adjustments can make all the difference to making your messages more “sayable” and “hearable”.

It’s how leaders and teams deal with difficult moments that makes all the difference to morale, climate, cohesion and productivity...

In my workshops, I often liken conversations to a dance – and verbal formulas, I often say, are like learning particular dance moves – or, if you’re not into dancing, think of particular plays you practise over and over again in sport. Some of the special formulas we practise in this clinic are designed to help you over the hurdles that loom up during any tricky performance conversation. For example, you’ll learn starting formulas for raising performance issues cleanly and clear in the first place; formulas for putting things positively when describing the performance you want;  formulas for de-blaming your conversation, handling passivity, hostility and resistance and taking a more positive and appreciative coaching approach.

There’s loads of different verbals formulas in the self-coaching guide you get with coming along to the clinic. You may not want many of them. But a few may appeal as you come up against different kinds of difficult situations in your performance conversations where you don’t want to trip over your own tongue and make reforming a difficult performer even more of a distant prospect.

Dealing with Difficult Discussions

“How to have those difficult conversations without making the situation worse and approach them in a calmer, more productive way” Lesley W.

SUNSHINE COAST Dec 2-3

“I learnt a lot in ‘Positive Performance Conversations’ that I can readily apply… tools of real practical assistance in an area I’ve previously struggled with…and the self-coaching guide is fantastic. It’s one of the most useful courses I’ve ever attended.” Vanessa R. Queensland Health

Positive Performance Conversations works on a simple principle: focus on the positives you want to see, not the negatives you don’t.  Our 5 Footings and Frameworks Model helps you to focus less on what's wrong and more on what’s expected; to create a different emotional climate that enables you to give difficult feedback in constructive ways, and keep defensiveness at bay so they hear what you have to say and heed your help.

We’ll show you crucial scaffolding to help you plan and prepare, and take you on a step-by-step tour of carefully-crafted formulas to carry-through talks with reluctant performers more competently and comfortably – and make hard performance conversations a little bit easier.
